What is the Over Running Freewheel Alternator Pulley
Overrunning alternator pulley (OAP) is very important to the smooth running of the modern internal combustion (IC) engine. The pulley is vital as it absorbs crankshaft palpitations and stops them from hitting the alternator.
Fuel saving and energy efficiency confirms why the OAP is being integrated into both diesel and petrol engines in passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
It is vital that your new alternator pulley is the same type that was installed by the vehicle manufacturer as original equipment.
A growling or whining noise can be an indication that the Alternator Pulley is becoming faulty. 80.000 to 100.000 miles is the lifespan. Bearing failure is the most common failure. Alternators with bearings can make a grinding noise if faulty.
If your alternator is rusty it can become stuck. Penetrating fluid can be used to release it.
It is not advised to drive a car with a broken belt even for a short distance
