Replacing your Central Locking
If your electronic door locks aren't unlocking when you press the button on your key fob or the door lock switch, it may be your remote!
Please start by checking the battery in the key fob. A replacement battery will cost less than five pounds.
If the electric motor inside the door lock actuator wears out then the door lock may lock or unlock slowly or work intermittently.
In some cases the problem with a door lock actuator is limited to only one door.
Replacing this part through a dealership or garage can be costly.
If you are replacing the part by yourself then it is best to have the part tested for fault by a mechanic first.
Is the Door Lock Actuator Failing?
Are you having issues operating the door? When the actuator moves the latch up, it connects the outside door handle to the opening mechanism.
Did you hear a loud clunking sound and the door didn't unlock? Over time this will get worse until finally the door lock mechanism will not open at all.
Faulty door locks have been known to affect car alarms going off! This can commonly happen in rainy weather when water gets inside the door lock connector.
Time to replace your failed Door Lock Actuator
The lock actuator is usually positioned below the door latch within the door panel. A rod connects the actuator to the latch, and another rod connects the latch to the knob that sticks up out of the top of the door. This then allows the door to be opened.
In some cars the outer door handle and window regulator may also need to be removed. Please remember that access inside the door panel will be restricted by light. A torch or flood light may be useful.
When replacing the old part it is very important to match up the part number to ensure you are buying the correct replacement.
Commonly Affected Vehicles
The Volkswagen Golf, Land Rover Evoque & Audi A4 are just a few vehicles known to have this issue.
Working with Electrics
When working with electrics, it is very important to fully disconnect the battery before starting work. Remember Safety First Folks.
When you have successfully replaced the Door Lock Actuator you will once again be able to operate the lock and unlock the door correctly.
